Research
Themes of the senior-researcher work at the Machine Elements / Tribology Lab.
- Machine-learning prediction of journal-bearing performance and of operating conditions.
- Failure prevention in marine shafting systems; bearing state estimation and early-failure detection with surrogate-model AI.
- Similarity / scaling of marine shafting systems using the π-theorem and the Sommerfeld number.
- Experimental characterization of stern-tube bearing materials — tribological and acoustic performance.
- Water-lubricated bearings and stern-tube-less vessel designs (with classification-society partners).
Anastasios G. Charitopoulos
Mechanical engineer. Doctoral research on CFD-based thermohydrodynamic (THD) and thermoelastohydrodynamic (TEHD) analysis and design optimization of thrust bearings, carried out at NTUA in collaboration with Prof. Michel Fillon (University of Poitiers, Pprime Institute).
